Building Climate-Resilient Communities Through Youth-Led Tree Planting and Ecosystem Restoration

On 28th Feb. 2026 during Umuganda in Gasabo District in partnership with BK Foundation marked the official launch of our project, “Building Climate-Resilient Communities Through Youth-Led Tree Planting and Ecosystem Restoration.” This milestone begins a strategic journey toward planting 50,000 trees.

The project seeks to empower young people as active champions of environmental conservation while restoring degraded ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity. Through strategic tree planting, community engagement, and ecosystem restoration initiatives, we aim to strengthen local resilience against the growing impacts of climate change, including soil erosion, land degradation, and the loss of natural habitats. Our approach is guided by the principle of planting the right tree species in the right location for the right purpose. By doing so, we not only improve environmental health but also maximize ecological, social, and economic benefits for surrounding communities. This initiative will contribute to carbon sequestration, watershed protection, improved air quality, and sustainable livelihoods while fostering a culture of environmental stewardship among young people.

Together, we are planting more than trees; we are planting hope, resilience, and a greener future for generations to come.

Impacts

"The Building Climate-Resilient Communities Through Youth-Led Tree Planting and Ecosystem Restoration” project is expected to deliver substantial environmental, social, and economic benefits that will contribute to sustainable development and climate resilience in Rwanda. Through the planting of 50,000 trees and the restoration of degraded ecosystems, the project will enhance biodiversity, improve soil health, reduce erosion, and strengthen the ecological integrity of targeted landscapes. These efforts will contribute to the recovery of natural habitats and the preservation of valuable ecosystem services.

The project will play a significant role in strengthening community resilience to climate change by increasing tree cover and promoting sustainable environmental management practices. The newly established trees will help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, regulate local climatic conditions, protect watersheds, and reduce the risks associated with flooding, drought, and land degradation. As a result, communities will be better equipped to adapt to the growing impacts of climate change while contributing to global mitigation efforts.

A key aspect of the initiative is the meaningful engagement of young people as leaders and agents of change in environmental conservation. By actively participating in tree planting and ecosystem restoration activities, youth will gain practical knowledge, leadership skills, and a stronger sense of environmental responsibility. This empowerment will help cultivate a new generation of climate champions capable of driving sustainable development within their communities.

The project is also expected to increase public awareness of environmental protection and climate action through community mobilization and educational activities. By fostering greater understanding of the importance of ecosystem restoration and sustainable natural resource management, the initiative will encourage long-term behavioral change and promote community ownership of conservation efforts.

Furthermore, the project will strengthen partnerships among government institutions, the private sector, civil society organizations, and local communities. These collaborations will enhance collective action and create a stronger platform for advancing environmental sustainability and climate resilience. Through these combined efforts, the project will contribute to Rwanda’s national environmental objectives, support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and leave a lasting green legacy for future generations.
